Software Technology Parks

On
one hand, India has been progressing rapidly since 1991 but on the other hand
progress appears slow. For example, the city of Bangalore in the year 2000 will
still suffer from 4 hours per day blackouts. These power outages are not the
result of a storm that knocked down a power line but because there is not
enough electricity to go around. This condition is not a new one. It has been
going on for several years. One can only speculate that it is a combination of
apathy, poor planning and unconcerned politicians. Then there is the problem of
getting a telephone connection. A few years ago an Indian would put his name on
a list and wait up to three years for a phone connection. Now it is better, the
wait has dropped to one year and a rumor is circulating that it is being
reduced to three months. So this leads us to where we started at "software
technology parks."
These parks provide a secure environment so that foreign companies can work
free from the worry of power failures and other inconveniences. The developers
have installed generators and they guarantee fast phone connections. They make
sure it is easy for foreign companies to do business. These software parks
provide what is needed at a cost that is considerably higher than outside the
park. The rent is likely to be $1 per sq. ft. There are much more economical
ways of to setting up the facilities of a new company in Bangalore but these
parks make sense to those who want to avoid some of the typical hassles.
But if you want to really experience India and save money then don't shelter
yourself. You can rent an office for one-third the cost and still be in a nice
building in a good location. Perhaps we can cover that in the next article.
