Bauls Clad in a half dhoti and alkhalla (saffron robe) with their hair coiled up in a bun and a tulsi (basil plant) garland circling their throat, the Bauls of Bengalare indeed an unique cult. They have fascinated generations with their migratory and bohemian lifestyle. Travelers of the "shahoj path" (easypath), they believe in simple living and great thinking. They wander about spreading the message of love, camaraderie and brotherhood through their songs. Their music has a definite earthy touch.
The bauls are not just a genre of music but also a religious sect. Their songs are largely sprinkled with religious overtones. They render beautifully composed lyrical allusions to the supreme being, aided by the sweet accompaniment of the Ektara. Also called the "Gopiyantro" the ektara is a one-stringed instrument which the baul strums during his renditions. The khamak a, similar kind of instrument, is also used. Along with these the baul uses the ghungur (anklebells) and the duggi to lend a magical element to his music. It is indeed a treat to hear the full throated renditions of a baul which elevates one's soul above mediocrity.
