The Supply Challenge
WebEnable >Elearning Solutions>The Supply Challenge

A worrying disconnect...

"There are indications, however, that Learning & Development departments, not to mention HR as a whole, lag behind the organisations they serve in this very area. During a roundtable discussion organised by LINE in late 2009, business leaders from global corporates reported that skills issues among those delivering learning and development are now a bigger block to adoption of new learning technologies than either board-level management or learner acceptance."

Despite the increasing demand for more innovative and effective learning solutions, statistics pointing to increased spending by organisations to acquire technology-based options, and the tectonic shift powered by Gen N, the supply side of the equation has at best made a small dent. Why is there such a poor response to the demand?

"Instructional designers [in India] are paid far less …..lack of awareness of instructional design as an integral competency for learning design and lack of clarity of roles and responsibilities. Often the value added by an instructional designer is equated with that of a content or technical writer."

To be successful, Learning Designers* must continually expand their knowledge in diverse topics, ranging from psychology, writing, sociology, cognitive science, HR, talent management, business processes, project management technology, etc. They must also stay abreast with different developments – what is happening in the schools, what the government is promoting, what the users / learners are saying and what technological advancement / convergence are showing…. There is much to be gained from different disciplines hence silos get in the way and should be removed. Curriculums offered by universities need to be more integrative and innovative.

Exciting changes are sweeping the learning world and the demand for effectively trained Learning Designers is still largely unfulfilled. Practitioners, especially those who are passionate, need to step in to fill the gap.

* Learning Design is a more appropriate term than the Instructional Design

  Trainee Testimonials
"I came to Primer from a totally different industry - sales and marketing in a bank. I came expecting inputs in soft skills and project management skills. But this program has made me discover my hidden skills such as time management and looking at the functionality and purpose of what I am working on. At Primer I have learnt to understand myself first and work keeping the end in mind. I would strongly recommend this program to those who believe they can achieve something in their career!"
